<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary shaft supporting structure for avoiding the occurrence of damage to a thin-film type sensor detecting a physical quantity such as a pressure or the like in a sliding area between a rotary shaft and a sliding bearing. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine 100 has a crankshaft 2 rotatably supported by a cylinder block 1 and a crank cap 5, integrally mounted on the cylinder block 1, by means of a bearing metal composed of an upper metal 7 and a lower metal 8. The lower metal 8 has a fitting surface 82 provided with a thin-film type pressure sensor 9 composed of an insulating layer 92, a sensitizing layer 91 and a protecting layer 93.
