PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for readily producing a high-quality cationized starch in good reaction efficiency. SOLUTION: The method for producing the cationized starch includes a step (1) of preparing a mixture containing starch by adding water and an alkali metal hydroxide to the starch at an average addition rate (molar number of the alkali metal hydroxide/molar number of the hydroxy group possessed by the starch/min) of from 0.0001 to 0.1, and a step (2) of subjecting the starch to cationization reaction by adding a quaternary ammonium compound having a glycidyl group to the resultant mixture under a condition of the water content in the reaction system of 4-35 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt.
