Zirconium oxide, or a zirconium compound capable of yielding zirconium oxide, is used as a melt additive in the manufacture of alkaliresistant silicate or alkali-resistant borosilicate glass. The zirconium may be added in the form of zirconium sand. Two particular examples are (percentages by weight). (1) SiO 2 57À5; B 2 O 3 1À8; Al 2 O 3 2À0; ZrO 2 14À5; Na 2 O 14À2; K 2 O 2À0; and BaO 8À0; and (2) SiO 2 74À7; B 2 O 3 11À5; Al 2 O 3 1À5; ZrO 2 4À7; Na 2 O 5À0; BaO 2À0; and Fluorspar (CaF 2 ) 0À6-1À0. |
