PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the incidence of unnecessary reflected light into the eyes to degrade the quality of an image in an image display apparatus comprising a display section for displaying the image, a hologram element placed in front of the eyes to guide light from the display section to the eyes to thereby provide an magnified virtual image of the image, and a transparent plate for holding the hologram element and guiding the light from the display section to the hologram element. SOLUTION: The image display apparatus includes the display section for displaying the image, an eyepiece optical system, and a transparent plate-like member for holding the eyepiece optical system. The image display apparatus is used with the eyepiece optical system placed in front of the eyes and with the plate-like member facing the eyes. The image display apparatus guides the light from the display section to the eyes through the eyepiece optical system to provide the virtual image of the image displayed on the display section, and allows light from the outside to be transmitted through the plate-like member and guided to the eyes to provide an outside image. The image display apparatus is provided with a transparent film 31 (a covering section) covering the plurality of members exposed to the surface of the plate-like member facing a user's eyes.
