<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pickup control method for an optical disk device, by which the optical disk device precisely performs reproduction operation of a signal recorded in an optical disk with a thickness which is outside the standard thickness of a protective layer. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the optical disk device performing read start operation of a signal recorded in the optical disk, after focus control operation, and tracking control operation are performed, vertical balance is adjusted so that L1 is equal to L2, before the signal is read where a maximal level value above a reference level Vr of an S curve, which is a focus error signal is L1 and a maximal level value below the reference level Vr is set to L2.
