PURPOSE: Lithium titanate having a nanotube form is provided to increase a specific surface area of an electrode by manufacturing the lithium titanate used as an electrode active material of a secondary battery into a nanostructure and to improve a rate property of the battery by making the diffusion of lithium ion fast. CONSTITUTION: Lithium titanate having a nanotube form includes lithium which is ion-exchanged within a crystal lattice of a crystalline structure containing titanium. The lithium titanate is used as an electrode active material and is marked by composition equation of LixTiyO4 (0.5<=x<=3, 1<=y<=2.5). A method for manufacturing the lithium titanate of the nanotube form comprises the following steps: preparing titanium dioxide(TiO2) powder of a metastable state; forming titanate of a layer structure containing lithium component by reacting LiOH aqueous solution with the titanium dioxide powder using an ion exchange method; heat-treating the titanate; and drying the titanate.
