PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device using a liquid crystal material exhibiting a blue phase improved in contrast. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display device including a liquid crystal layer exhibiting the blue phase, the liquid crystal layer exhibiting the blue phase is interposed between a pixel electrode layer having an opening pattern and a common electrode layer having an opening pattern (a slit). An electric field is applied between the pixel electrode layer and the common electrode layer which have opening patterns and are provided so that a liquid crystal is interposed therebetween, whereby an oblique (oblique to a substrate) electric field is applied to the liquid crystal.
