<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save a space in an internal combustion engine on which a valve characteristic adjusting device is mounted. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In a valve timing control device 2 serving as the valve characteristic adjusting device, the solenoid 20 of the changeover valve drive mechanism is stored and fixed in a valve camshaft. Therefore, in the internal combustion engine on which the valve timing control device 2 having the changeover valve drive mechanism is mounted, the solenoid 20 is not exposed to the outside, and the space can be sufficiently saved. Since the solenoid 20 is rotated integrally with the valve timing control device 2, a configuration for transmitting a movement force between the plunger 20b and the spool 18b of the solenoid 20 can be easily provided with high flexibility.
