A traffic signal control system and method

A traffic signal control system is disclosed. The system includes a traffic signal control module (110) powered by an external alternating current source (160) and an auxiliary power module (120) having an internal direct current source (122) and coupled to the traffic signal control module to selectively power the traffic signal control module. The auxiliary power module is configured to be selectively connected to an external direct current source (151) via an electrical lead (126). The traffic signal control module is configured to be powered by the auxiliary power module and selectively by the external direct current source when the external alternating current source is interrupted.
