Flax or hemp is scoured with an aqueous solution containing (a) an alkali metal sulphite, (b) a neutral alkali metal phosphate or pyrophosphate, and (c) an alkali metal hydrosulphite or formaldehyde sulphoxylate. The sodium and potassium salts are specified. The bath may be at a temperature of 50 DEG to 90 DEG C. The material, which may be yarn or fabric, may be subsequently bleached with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide containing sodium silicate at temperatures up to 90 DEG C., or with hypochlorites. |
