<p>Polishing or grinding materials or workpieces using a titanium containing abrasive material, which is obtained as intermediate or byproduct in titanium dioxide production by a sulfate process, is claimed. Independent claims are included for: (1) preparing the titanium-containing abrasive material, comprising neutralizing or partially neutralizing acid decomposed residues, which are obtained from the production of titanium dioxide by sulfate process, with alkaline compounds, preferably sodium hydroxide solution, and processing the neutralized decomposition residues, preferably by spray drying or spin flash drying to granular abrasive material having an average granule particle size of 10-600, preferably 50-300 mu m; and (2) the titanium-containing abrasive material comprising intermediate- or byproducts of the titanium dioxide production, preferably decomposition residues which are accumulated in the production of titanium dioxide, where the abrasive material in dry form comprises 0.5-20, preferably 3-8 wt.% of inorganic salts, preferably alkali sulfate, based on the water-insoluble solids, and the abrasive material as aqueous suspension comprises 0.1-10, preferably 0.5-3.5 wt.% of an organic dispersion, based on the water-insoluble solids.</p> |
