<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transmission type liquid crystal display device reducing a backlight value by reducing both saturation and luminance of input RGB values, while reducing image quality deterioration as much as possible. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the transmission type liquid crystal display device including a liquid crystal panel and a backlight, the liquid crystal panel 15 has pixels each divided into four sub-pixels, R, G, B and W. The back light is a white backlight 17 having controllable luminance. Further, a simultaneous saturation-luminance reducing section 11 carries out simultaneously reduction in saturation and luminance of an input RGB signal as an original input signal (simultaneously reducing saturation and luminance while keeping hue so that only the saturation may not become zero in reducing both saturation and luminance). In simultaneously reducing the saturation and the luminance, a saturation/luminance reduction ratio as a parameter for adjusting the reduction ratio of the saturation to the luminance is used, the saturation/luminance reduction ratio is adapted and calculated for each of pixels.
