A one-dimensional pattern is highlighted and displayed by giving angle-dependent information to an input image. Data relating to the input image is inputted to a computer (Sa1). An arbitrarily defined constant (m) is inputted as contrast intensity (Sa2). A closed region (x, y) comprising a plurality of pixels in the input image is demarcated as a region (D) to be subjected to an operation, the degrees of inclination between respective two pixels, a pixel of interest in the region (D) to be subjected to the operation and each of arbitrarily defined pixels around the pixel, are summed over the whole circumference around the pixel of interest, and the sum is divided by the number of pixels within the region to be subjected to the operation to thereby calculate the mean value thereof (Sa3). An amplitude value (ß) of a gradient obtained in step (Sa3) is multiplied by the contrast intensity (m) (provided that m is a positive constant) inputted in step (Sa2), an arbitrarily defined offset value (?) is added to the obtained value (Sa4), and a final output image is obtained (Sa5).
