<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fixing device that reduces a change in a load on a recording medium and suppresses image disturbance. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The fixing device includes: a pressure roller; a fixing roller that forms a fixing nip part which is an area where it is brought into pressure-contact with the pressure roller; a pressure varying mechanism that changes the pressure of the fixing nip; a running detecting section that detects the running state of a recording medium; a pressure control section that calculates, on the basis of the running state, first timing when the leading end of a recording medium rushes into the fixing nip, and controls driving of the pressure varying mechanism; and a timing detecting section that detects timing of actuating the pressure varying mechanism. On the basis of the detection result of the first timing obtained by the timing detecting section, the pressure control section performs control such that until the leading end of the recording medium rushes in the fixing nip part, the pressure of the fixing nip part is made a first pressure which enables conveyance of the recording medium, and after the leading end of the recording medium rushes in the fixing nip part, the pressure varying mechanism is driven to raise the pressure of the fixing nip part to a second pressure which is necessary for fixing an unfixed toner image.
