PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image capturing apparatus and a subject tracking method capable of reducing a wrong subject from being tracked when detecting and tracking a specific subject or partial subjects included in a moving image. SOLUTION: The image capturing apparatus has a subject tracking means for detecting a specific subject or partial subjects included in the moving image and tracking the subject on the basis of similarity extracted by matching processing with a reference image registered beforehand. The subject tracking means includes: a reference image registering means for registering the reference image; a matching processing means for performing the matching processing; and a tracking end decision means for ending tracking of the subject. The tracking end decision means is configured to end the tracking of the subject in accordance with the information other than the information used for the matching processing.
