PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for sensing multi-level cell data are provided to improve the density of a chip by using the little number of a sense amplifier in classifying multi-level data. CONSTITUTION: A first sense amplifier(12) compares a first reference voltage with read data of a bit line and amplifies a comparison result to outputs a first output. A reference voltage selection unit(14) selects one of a second or a third reference voltage as a four reference voltage according to the logic level of the first output. A second sense amplifier(16) compares the four reference voltage with the read data of the bit line and amplifies a comparison result to output a second output. A decoder(18) outputs sensing data by decoding the first output and second output. The first sense amplifier and the second sense amplifier are comprised of a latch type differential amplifier.
