Catalyst comprises (a) a molding body containing at least one oxide from the elements of the main or secondary group II-IV or a mixed oxide compound based on it, where the components are used as base material of the molding body; an additional component containing an oxide of an element of the main group IV, which is added during the shaping process; an active surface component, which contains a platinum compound; and an additional surface component, which contains a compound of an element of the main group IV. Independent claims are also included for: (1) preparing the catalyst, comprising simultaneously or consecutively impregnating the molding body with the active and the additional surface component in at least one impregnation step, and further processing the so produced molding body in to the catalyst; and (2) dehydrogenating alkanes, comprising conducting alkanes or hydrocarbon to dehydrogenate in the mixture with quasi-inert gases through a reactor for the dehydrogenation, which is loaded with the catalyst.
