<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording medium of which the surface is sufficiently flattened by backfilling a worked guard region without destroying a shape of a patterned recording magnetic material, in a flattening step of the patterned medium. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The patterned medium 100 is filled to which carbon atom is coupled to recessed guard region 104 where no data is recorded a hollow fullerene composed of carbon atoms bonded to each other, or a hollow carbon cluster molecule 110 which is its derivative into a recessed guard region 104 to which data is not recorded, wherein a level difference of the guard region is less than the average diameter of the hollow carbon cluster molecule 110.
