<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that large maintenance costs are required for replacement work and adjustment work of a light source because the light source inevitably needs replacement due to its lifetime being shorter than a lifetime of an image display device. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When a lifetime detection circuit 11 determines that a color light source having reached the end of its lifetime exists among R, G, and B light sources of a first light source 120 in the case that respective color light sources of the first light source 120 are driven in time division to emit light, the color light source having reached the end of its lifetime is set to an off state and a color light source emitting light in the same color as that color light source, in a second light source 130 is set to an on state, and a rotation command is issued to a motor which rotationally drives a dichroic mirror corresponding to the color light source having reached the end of its lifetime, out of motors 13, 17, 16. On reception of the rotation command, the motor rotates the dichroic mirror corresponding to the color light source having reached the end of its lifetime, out of dichroic mirrors 2 to 4 so that an optical axis of a bundle of rays reflected by this dichroic mirror is aligned with an optical axis of a condenser lens 5 again.
