A system for use in transmitting light in a wellbore includes a seal 110a, 110b to seal around the wellbore to define an isolated zone 100. A fluid light path 68 is present in the form of a fluid supplied to the isolated zone 100, the fluid being adapted to displace less optically transmissive fluid residing, in the wellbore. The fluid may be a gas and the light may be generated by a laser heating the wall of the wellbore.
