<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device capable of reducing power consumption without causing degradation in the display picture quality, particularly, decrease in luminance; and to provide a display method. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Grayscale levels of red, green and blue image data are detected in each sub-frame, and the intensity of incident light to a liquid crystal panel and the transmittance of the liquid crystal panel are adjusted based on the detection results. The transmittance is adjusted in such a manner that the transmittance of the liquid crystal panel reaches the maximum for image data requiring the maximum luminous energy of transmissive light in each of red, green and blue sub-frames, and the intensity of the incident light is decreased in accordance with the adjustment results of the transmittance. Thus, power consumption of the backlight is suppressed as much as possible by controlling the luminous energy of incident light to the display element to the minimum requirement, while maintaining the display image of each color in accordance with the grayscale level.
