PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for reading from and/or writing to a holographic storage medium with improved overlap of an object beam and one or more reference beams.

SOLUTION: The apparatus and method for reading from and/or writing to the holographic storage medium (5) using a coaxial arrangement of an object beam (20) and one or more reference beams (21) or a coaxial arrangement of a reconstructed object beam (15) and one or more reference beams (21) are proposed. A focus of the one or more reference beams (21) within the holographic storage medium (5) is shifted along the optical axis relatively to a focus of the object beam (20) or the reconstructed object beam (15).
