The method involves determining distance of a vehicle (1) to a limitation of a parking gap (P) by an evaluation device based on a distance covered by the vehicle. Driving speed of the vehicle is controlled during a parking process depending on the distance determined by the evaluation device. Distance (a) of the vehicle to obstacles e.g. parked vehicles (A1, A2), is measured during the process by a front sensor arrangement (4) and a rear sensor arrangement (5) provided at a vehicle. The driving speed is controlled by a controller based on the distance measured by the arrangements. An independent claim is also included for a device for assisting a parking process of a vehicle comprising a parking gap measuring device for determining a position of a limitation of a parking gap.
