The machine (10) has a moving device (12) for moving articles. An exchangeable furnishing unit exchanges identification data and/or control information with the machine and/or with the moving device, when the furnishing unit is connected to the machine. The machine is associated with a storage area (20) for storing another exchangeable furnishing unit and the former exchangeable furnishing unit. An automatically controlled feeding and withdrawing device (22) unit operatively connects the storage area with the machine. One of the furnishing units is formed by a direct printing unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a machine for furnishing articles.
