The device has an electric motor fixed at a mounting base that is attached to a furniture. A transmission arrangement has a pivotable gear wheel (8) and a linearly movable toothed rack (9), which are provided in contact with each other during closing of a furniture part i.e. sliding door, by a synchronization and/or pre-acceleration device. The gear wheel and the toothed rack are not in contact with each other when the sliding door is moved to a predetermined distance. The synchronization and/or pre-acceleration device has a bar (12) projecting over an outer circumference of the gear wheel. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a drive device.
