<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting device, a light source device, a projector and a method of lighting a discharge lamp capable of improving lighting startability of the discharge lamp. <P>SOLUTION: The lighting device 8 provided with a pair of electrodes E to light the discharge lamp filled with alight emitting material including mercury includes: a first terminal 83L connected to the electrode EL, to which mercury easily adheres; a second terminal 83R connected to the electrode ER, to which mercury is difficult to adhere; a setting means (control device) 82 for setting alternating current to be supplied to each terminal 83 in a starting period from insulation breakdown to a start of discharge between the tips of the pair of electrodes E; and a supply means (supply device) 81 for supplying the corresponding alternating current to each terminal 83. The setting means 82 sets the alternating current so that the half-cycle electricity quantity supplied to the first terminal 83L is larger than the half-cycle electricity quantity supplied to the second terminal 83R in the initial time of the starting period under the condition wherein the first terminal 83L initially operates as a cathode, and that the half-cycle electricity quantity supplied to each terminal 83 becomes nearly equal in the final term of the starting period. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
