The method involves heating a heat transfer medium in a buffer storage (1), and storing the heat transfer medium in compliance with a temperature layering. Industrial water is heated by heat from an upper area of the buffer storage. The industrial water is guided through a pre-heating heat exchanger (7) before heating. The pre-heating heat exchanger is arranged in a lower area of the buffer storage. The heat transfer medium is guided back into a central area of the buffer storage after passing through an industrial water-heat exchanger (9). An independent claim is also included for a device for heating industrial water.
