PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control (alter) polarization states of light sources having a plurality of wavelengths by a half-wave plate without incurring increase of the number of components e.g. usage of a plurality of half-wave plates. SOLUTION: The half-wave plate includes a quartz plate (first quartz component) 101 and a quartz plate (second quarts component) 102. The quartz plates 101 and 102 are disposed in such a state that principal surfaces thereof are parallel to each other. Each of the quartz plates 101 and 102 is e.g. a Y-cut or X-cut quartz plate having e.g. 0.193 mm plate thickness.
