PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject aminoalcohol in high yield with industrial advantage by allowing a specific cyclic hamiacetal to react with a specific amine and hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst. SOLUTION: A cyclic hemiacetal of formula I [(n) is 0 or 1; R1 and R2 are each H, a (substituted) monovalent saturated hydrocarbon or the like; and R3-R5 are each H or a (substituted) monovalent aromatic hydrocarbon], for example, 2-hydroxytetrahydropyran or the like, a primary amine of formula: R6-NH2 [R6 is a (substituted) monovalent saturated hydrocarbon or the like], e.g. dimethylamine or the like and hydrogen are allowed react with each other in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to prepare a compound of the formula. In a preferred embodiment, the amount of the compound of formula I is 2.0-4.0 moles per mole of the primary amine. The amount of the hydrogenation catalyst is preferably 0.005-0.1 pt.wt. per 1 pt.wt. of the compound of formula I. The partial pressure of the hydrogen in the reaction system is 0.5-100 atm, the reaction temperature is preferably 40-140 deg.C and the reaction time is 0.5-20 hours. |
