PURPOSE: A shock absorbing device for a railway vehicle is provided to efficiently absorb striking energy applied to the front end part of a railway vehicle by forming the shock absorbing device with a composite tube. CONSTITUTION: A shock absorbing device for a railway vehicle is composed of a composite tube(110). If the inner diameter of the composite tube is 3 inch or less, the ratio between the thickness(t) and the inner diameter is 0.05 or more. If the inner diameter of the composite tube is between 3 inch and 6 inch, the ratio between the thickness and the inner diameter is 0.06 or more.
