PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a congestion detection device capable of recognizing the degree of congestion more accurately. SOLUTION: A monitoring space 16 is set at the entrance, exit or the like of an escalator 10 in the range not including the rails 12 or the floor face 14, and the congestion detection device determines the three dimensional shape of a human group in the monitoring space 16 and/or a plurality of vector representing the motion of the human group from images taken by 2 cameras 18, 20 installed above, and based thereon determines the degree of congestion by calculating the volume occupancy rate and/or the three dimensional flow.
