Coating composition (I) comprises a mixture of nanocrystalline metal oxide particles, titanium dioxide sol and at least one compound from glass-forming elements in dissolved or dispersed form, where the glass-forming elements are capable of glass formation in oxide form and the proportion of metal oxide particles is 20-70 mass%. Independent claims are included for: (1) producing a layer with a hierarchical micro- and nano-structured surface comprising forming a liquid mixture from metal oxide particles, titanium dioxide sol and the compound from glass-forming elements, applying the liquid mixture on a surface to be coated, drying the obtained layer and heat treating the coated surface; and (2) the layer obtained by the above process.
