In a separator for galvanic cells comprising a layer of glass fibres fused together and having bonded to at least one face a layer of matted glass fibres, the fibres have different thicknesses and thermoplastic properties and their distribution is such that after fusion by heat of those fibres which have a low softening point, at least two layers are produced, one layer being micro-porous and resistant to crushing and the other layer remaining elastic and porous to gases. All the fibres may have the same chemical composition. The layers may be prepared separately prior to the fusing process, each layer comprising fibres of the same diameter, volume density, and softening temperature. The layers are fused in turn, and are calendered. A small amount of a binder may be included in the mat to facilitate assembly of the fibres. Specifications 849,833 and 851,389 are referred to. |
