The method involves scanning a continuous original signal (KOS) to be digitized for obtaining a set of scanned time/amplitude data pairs (AA) from respective scan times and amplitude values. A digital representation of the signal is determined based on the set of scanned data pairs. Parameters (BB) of an approximation function are determined based on the set of scanned data pairs, where a tolerance band, in which the approximation function is present, is determined. The parameters of the approximation function are outputted. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an encoding unit for digitizing a continuous original signal (2) a reproduction unit for generating a continuous output signal.
