Stabilisation of vinylchloride polymers

Dimercaptides of the general formula where X represents an alkyl radical and M represents a calcium, barium or cadmium cation; are prepared by reacting the appropriate thiophenol or alkali metal mercaptide thereof with a suitable calcium, barium or cadmium salt.ALSO:Vinyl chloride polymers are stabilized by dimercaptides of the general formula where X represents an alkyl group and M represents a calcium, barium or cadmium cation. The preferred mercaptides are those in which the alkyl groups have 1 to 9 carbon atoms. One or more mercaptide may be used in amounts of 0.1 to 10%, preferably 2%, by weight based on the unstabilized vinyl chloride polymer composition. In an example, a polyvinyl chloride resin, type "QYSM-5-Bakelite" (Trade Mark) is compounded with 50% by weight of dioctylphthalate and 2% by weight of cadmium di-(p-t-butylphenylmercaptide).
