PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for controlling a position at which data is to be recorded. SOLUTION: In the recording position controlling method and apparatus, a recording medium is irradiated with reference light and signal light, a focus error signal indicating a distance difference between a first focus which is a focus of the reference light and a second focus which is a focus of the signal light is generated based on information about a reflected signal light generated by reflecting the signal light from the recording medium, and thereafter, the second focus is moved toward a position of the first focus, based on the focus error signal.
