PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a magnetic track pattern without damaging a layer exposed on the surface, by disposing a new easy-to-remove layer directly below a resist and thereby easily and certainly removing the resist. SOLUTION: In a method for manufacturing a perpendicular magnetic recording medium 100: a magnetic recording layer 122 is deposited on a disk substrate 110; a protective layer 126 is deposited on the magnetic recording layer; a release layer 130 is deposited on the protective layer via SOG; a resist layer 132 is deposited on the release layer; a predetermined pattern is formed by machining the resist and release layers and partially changing thickness of the resist and release layers, the magnetic recording layer is magnetically separated with a pattern corresponding to the predetermined pattern; and the resist layer is removed by removing the release layer with a solvent.
