PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing at high yield and high purity, 2-alkylalkane-1, 2-diols applicable to defoamants, surfactants, detergent builders and the like. SOLUTION: The method for producing 2-alkylalkane-1, 2-diols represented by formula (II) includes: dimerizing 1-olefins to obtain vinylidene olefins; oxidizing the resultant olefins to produce epoxides represented by formula (I) (wherein n is an integer of 4 to 30); performing the hydration reaction of epoxides by adding a hydration catalyst and at least one selected from the group consisting of ethers, hydrocarbons and alcohols; neutralizing or filtering the resultant substance to remove the hydration catalyst; distilling off the solvent; and then performing a vacuum distillation.
