<p>Provided is a detecting element which, when excited by an excitation light, emits a light corresponding to the surrounding atmosphere. A parameter for a predetermined gas or liquid present in the surrounding atmosphere is detected. The element is characterized by comprising a substrate and, formed on the substrate, nano-scale crystal structures constituted of a compound-semiconductor luminescent element having a well layer of a heterostructure. The element is further characterized by the following. In the nano-scale crystal structures, adsorption of molecules or atoms of the predetermined gas or liquid distorts, in the well layer, the band of the structure having a smaller band gap width. The distortion brings about a change in transition energy, and the change changes at least one of the intensity and wavelength of the light emitted by the well layer. As a result, a parameter for the gas or liquid is exhibited.</p> |
