Disclosed is a birefringent film containing an aromatic polyester having a repeating unit represented by general formula (1). In general formula (1), A, B, C and D independently represent a group selected from halogeno groups, alkyl groups having 1-6 carbon atoms and aryl groups; a and b each represents an integer of 0-4; c and d each represents an integer of 0-3; R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1-10 carbon atoms; R2 represents an alkyl group having 2-10 carbon atoms; R3-R6 independently represent a group or atom selected from a hydrogen atom, halogeno groups, alkyl groups having 1-6 carbon atoms and aryl groups; and l and m each represents an integer of not less than 2.
