The driver information device has an interface to a camera unit (2) for detecting a road sign and a course of a traffic lane. An evaluation unit (3) allocates the road sign to a traffic lane. The evaluation unit provides an interface to a display device (5) for transmission of a display description of the road sign in the display device relative to the traffic lane. Another interface is provided to a device for determining the position of a motor vehicle (1) on the traffic lane. The vehicle lane is displayed in the display device in a spatial proportion relative to the traffic lane. An independent claim is included for a method for displaying a road sign in a display device for a vehicle.
