A method and apparatus for processing an audio signal is disclosed. Herein, the method includes receiving a downmix information having an independent object and a background object downmixed therein; generating a first multi-channel information for controlling the independent object; and generating a second multi-channel information for controlling the background object using the downmix information and the first multi-channel information.
