<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction engagement device which simplifies mounting work and prevents erroneous mounting effectively during the mounting work. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The friction engagement device includes four pieces of large diameter friction plates 45, which have outer engagement parts 451 that engage with a spline part extending in the axial direction on the inside circumferential surface of a case and which are mounted movably in the axial direction to the case, and three pieces of small diameter friction plates, which have inner engagement parts that engage with a spline part extending in the axial direction on the outside circumferential surface of a drum part of a ring gear and which are mounted movably in the axial direction to the drum part arranged between the large diameter friction plates 45. The device also includes a ribbon spring 6, which is attached so as to straddle continuously in the axial direction at the position of circumferential direction in the same phase to the outer engagement part 451 of each of the large diameter friction plates 45 and which generates a spring force in the direction of expanding in the axial direction an interval between the large diameter friction plates 45, 45 adjacent to each other.
