Apparatus for paying off wire comprises an upright stand having rotating drive means in its base, a lever mounting said stand for pivotal movement to a generally horizontal position, and actuating means acting on the lever, whereby said stand may be raised and lowered. Wire 15 from a coil 14, supported on a stand B rotated about a vertical axis by a motor 5, passes over the edge of a disc. 13 supported on the coil and thence over a pulley 16. The stand B and a similar stand A are journalled in levers 7 rocked about horizontal pivots 8 by pistonrods 10 from vertical discharge positions to nearly horizontal loading positions. As the wire is uncoiled from the stand B fresh coils are loaded on the stand A, in its horizontal position, by a crane 12, the leading and trailing ends of these coils being welded together to form one long coil 11. When the coil on the stand B has been unwound to about a foot from a support disc 2 of the stand, the rotation of the stand is stopped and the trailing end of the coil 14 is welded to the leading end of the coil 11, the wire still unwinding from the stand B until the latter is empty whereupon the stand A is raised to the vertical position and rotated and the stand B lowered to the horizontal position. A switch 17 on each stand pressed by the coil being unwound and a switch 18 on each disc 2 of the stands and engaged by the discs 13 when the stand is empty may control the motors 5 rotating the stands and the piston rods 10 swinging the stands. Means may be provided to stop the machine if the pulley 16 fails to rotate. |
