The invention relates to a combustion system having a burner and a membrane unit, comprising a retentate side and a permeate side for separating oxygen from air, the membrane unit being connected to the burner by the permeate side thereof via a pipeline, a heat exchanger being connected in a combustion gas flow such that a hot combustion gas arising from fossil combustion may be applied to the primary side of said heat exchanger, and the air that may be applied to the secondary side of the heat exchanger may be heated to a temperature required for the operation of the membrane unit and introduced to the membrane unit. The invention further relates to a method for operating such a combustion system.
