PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hoisting machine for an elevator having stable braking performance while capable of being thinned or miniaturized including an electric motor and a brake device. SOLUTION: An electromagnetic brake includes a rotatably supported braking arm arranged on a base and having a braking piece oppositely arranged at a braking surface with a rotor outer peripheral surface as a braking surface, a braking spring for applying pressure to the braking arm so that the braking piece adds braking to a rotor by pressing the braking surface, an L-shaped interlocking means having one side crossing with the braking arm and rotatably supported by interlocking the braking arm, and an electromagnetic means for releasing the braking of the rotor by the releasing of the braking piece by driving one side of the interlocking means in the horizontal direction against a spring force of the braking spring. This electromagnetic brake is also arranged within a width of the base and between the rope end on the rotor side and the anti-rotor side end of the base. COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
