PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an alcohol compound having a cyclic hydrocarbon, in which method a hydrogenated boron compound such as sodium borohydride is used; reaction is carried out in the presence of methanol; and reduction reaction advances easily. SOLUTION: The method industrially advantageously produces an alcohol compound represented by formula (2): HOCH<SB>2</SB>-A<SP>2</SP>-A<SP>1</SP>-A<SP>3</SP>-Q from an ester compound represented by formula (1): RCO<SB>2</SB>-A<SP>2</SP>-A<SP>1</SP>-A<SP>3</SP>-Y by using an easily treatable reagent. In formula (1), A<SP>1</SP>is a cyclic hydrocarbon group optionally crosslinked; each of A<SP>2</SP>and A<SP>3</SP>is a single bond, etc.; R is a low alkyl group; and Y is a hydrogen atom or a group represented by -CO<SB>2</SB>R. In formula (2), each of A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>, and A<SP>3</SP>is the same as above-described; and Q is a hydrogen atom when Y is a hydrogen atom and Q is a hydroxymethyl group when Y is a group represented by -CO<SB>2</SB>R.
