The method involves providing labels with labeling glue in labeling assemblies (10, 11), and transferring the labels to containers (3). Actual glue usage of assemblies is continuously determined by measuring devices (26, 27) during continuous labeling process. A standardized glue usage i.e. glue usage for determined number of labels, is determined from the actual glue usage by considering number of labels processed in a measuring and/or time interval. A surface-specific glue usage is determined by considering the labels processed in the time interval and surface dimension. An independent claim is also included for a labeling machine comprising labeling assemblies.
