PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of 2-chloromethyl-6-methylpyridine of high-purity useful as a raw material compound of an agricultural/horticultural bactericide and the like in a good yield under a mild condition. SOLUTION: The manufacturing method of 2-chloromethyl-6-methylpyridine comprises causing 2,6-dimethylpyridine-N-oxide to react with phosphorus oxychloride in the presence of a base. The manufacturing method of 2-chloromethyl-6-methylpyridine wherein the base is an amine compound and pKa in water of a conjugate acid thereof is 6.0-12.0 is provided.
