<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently perform processing as overall processing of a retrieval system sequentially processing a plurality of sets of equipment connected with a network even if equipment occurring a delay of internal processing exists in the system. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In a retrieval system including a retrieval device receiving a result response for a retrieval request as well as transmitting the request; and a plurality of storage devices including storage units storing data and retrieving the data corresponding to the request from the storage unit to transmit index information of the retrieved data to the retrieval device, the storage device which has received the request during the use of the storage unit transmits the storage unit under-use information without retrieving the data, and the retrieval device which has received the storage unit under-use information retransmits the request to the storage device which has transmitted the storage unit under-use information.
